Brushing up on brush care

If you enjoy using a shaving brush make sure you protect your investment. Here are the do’s and don’ts of brush care.

Quality shaving brushes are made using badger hair, held by glue. After shaving, rinse the shaving cream from the brush and shake off excess water. Never stand your wet brush facing upwards. Water will seep into the handle breaking down the glue and the hairs will start to fall out. Instead, use a stand or hang the brush on a hook in a well-ventilated area.

Follow these tips and your brush will last many years. shaving brush

How soon before an event should I get a haircut?

So you’re getting hitched, or maybe you’re getting those forever-displayed senior photos taken. Whatever the occasion you want your hair to looks it’s best.

As a general rule we recommend a haircut about one to two weeks before your event. That said, some guys love the look of a super fresh cut; others don’t want that “I just got a haircut” look so base your decision on what makes you feel the best and most confident.best men's haircut

If you do decide to plan your cut a couple of weeks ahead of your event, you may find that your sideburns are getting a little out of control and your neckline isn’t so sharp anymore. Now before you take that Gillette to the back of your neck, don’t forget about our complimentary Tighten the Edges service. In about 10 minutes we will tame those sideburns, clean up those pesky hairs tickling your ears, straighten up that neckline and finish off with our famous straight razor shave on your neck so you’re ready for your Kodak moment.

Let’s Heat Things Up!

massage, sports massage

If you’ve ever had a massage you understand how great it feels to have all those muscle knots worked out. But did you know that by adding heat to your massage you may get even better results? Here’s why.

  1. Heat = Relaxation. Heat is great for getting a deep muscle massage without the “hurt” of a deep massage. What I mean by that is, by adding heat, the sensory receptors in your skin are stimulated and in turn decrease pain receptors. Massage itself decreases stress and tension in the muscles by increasing circulation. When heat is added, the blood vessels dilate and increase oxygen flow to muscles which causes further relaxation than with massage alone. And with more relaxed muscles, your therapist can make more progress on those knots.
  2. Heat = Healing. Heat helps heal damaged tissues from common overexertion injuries, chronic injuries and recent injuries that are in late stages of healing (past the ice stage). Heat helps injuries that are no longer swollen by reducing discomfort, pain and stiffness. If you have come for a sports massage or have a specific area or injury  bothering you, ask your massage therapist if adding heat would benefit you.

At Fritz’s Deep Heat may be added to any 60 or 90 minute massage. We use steam packs heated in water over an extended period of time. The packs themselves cover the shoulder/back area and will hold heat for over 30 minutes, which makes them much more beneficial than hot stones, which heat only a small area and lose their heat within minutes.

Whether you just want to relax in your massage, or want the therapeutic effect of heat, try our “Deep Heat” add-on service for only $5!!

TOP MEN’S SALON IN LOUISVILLE ENCOURAGES CHEATING!!

Fritz's encourages men to cheat

Believe it or not, it’s true. Fritz’s Salon & Spa for Men is going on record. We want you to cheat.

Now, we don’t want  you to cheat on your taxes because if you get caught and thrown in the slammer your hair is not going to look good for a very long time.

it's ok to cheat on your stylist

No need to hide…

We certainly don’t want you to cheat on your spouse, that is ALWAYS a no-no. We do, however, encourage you to cheat on your stylist! Yes, you heard right. We are here to serve you, not the other way around. If, for whatever reason, you can’t get in to see your usual stylist, it is more than okay to schedule with another. It’s not okay to make a business trip or go on an important interview looking sub-par.

So don’t cheat yourself out of looking awesome, just go ahead and cheat on your stylist. Come on…you know you want to 🙂

Who is Fritz’s Best Stylist?

“Who is the best?” is a question our salon coordinators are often asked when booking appointments.

While I wanted to remain anonymous for my blog posts, I will admit I am the Stylist Manager at our Hurstbourne location.  With that being said, I find that I am very qualified to write on this subject.  I have to say skill-wise absolutely every stylist is our best stylist.  Fritz’s owner and management team have made a commitment that every stylist at Fritz’s is 100% trained and qualified to give an amazing men’s haircut!  As our name Fritz’s Salon and Spa FOR MEN would indicate, we only work on male clientele.  So we have A LOT of experience in this area.

which stylist is the best

Mellow Mom, Kristina

The one way we all differ, that makes us not any less of a stylist but a better fit with clients, is our personalities. I think personality can determine who is the best stylist for you.  We cross the spectrum on great personalities– we have boisterous and mellow, full speed ahead and laid back, moms and single ladies.  It is a mixture that for years has proven to make a wonderful, fun environment of different choices for our clients.

One thing you will find here is that we openly invite you to try out different stylists to see who is the best fit for your hair and your time spent in our salon.

And FYI — I am the mellow, laid back, mom that thinks she’s a pretty amazing stylist 😉

Blast the Years Away

If the guying looking back at you in the mirror has aged too much for your liking, you may want to consider microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is a quick non-invasive procedure that resurfaces the skin. It removes the top layer of skin by ‘sandblasting’ it with medical grade crystals, revealing younger looking skin below (It’s kind of like power washing your deck to remove stains and brighten it up). It is successful in dramatically reducing scarring, large pores, pigmentation spots, sun damage, wrinkles, and uneven skin texture and tone. The crystals remove dead skin cells which promote new, smoother clearer skin.

For best results a series of 6 treatments approximately 2-3 weeks apart is recommended. The treatment itself takes only about 30 minutes so it’s easy to fit into even the busiest schedule. Mild redness is to be expected for a few hours after the treatment, along with a feeling of mild sunburn or windburn. Avoid direct sun exposure for 48 hours and any type of exfoliation after the treatment. While microderm is not recommended for clients with sensitive skin, severe acne, or rosacea, it  is one the most effective and beneficial ways to maintain healthy skin.

Fritz’s offers Microdermabrasion at our Hurstbourne facility. Skincare consultions are always free, so just ask for me (Samantha) when you come in and we’ll see if microderm may be right for you.

Sweet Talk

cookies baked fresh daily

When you walk through the door at Fritz’s it’s hard to resist the smell of warm, freshly baked cookies. That’s probably why between both locations we bake roughly 2,400 cookies EVERY month!

As a salon coordinator who spends her days sitting up front with a plate of these warm delicious treats, I spend most of my time fighting temptation and keeping the platter full of our current seasonal flavor.

We are often asked whether we bake the cookies here and which flavors are the favorites. Yes, we bake several trays every day – that fresh-baked cookie smell is authentic, not air freshener! Over the years we have found that chocolate chip (obviously), gingerbread, and red white and blue are among the biggest hits with our guests.

Many of you joke that you only come to Fritz’s for a beverage and a few of our signature cookies. However we like to think that it really adds a warm touch to an already great experience.

How to look great between haircuts

tighten the edges, look good between cutsBy: Vanessa Lucchese

So the first thing you notice when your hair starts to grow out is that it touches the top of your ear and that fuzz on the back of your neck drives you crazy! You’re not ready for a full haircut, you just need to be cleaned up a bit. That’s where Fritz’s comes in.

Between haircuts we provide one Tighten the Edges Service absolutely free! Better yet, it only takes 5-10 minutes of your time and you don’t need an appointment. Just walk in when it’s convenient for you.

The Tighten the Edges includes using the trimmer to clean up around your ears, neckline, and sideburns, followed by a straight razor neck shave.

So don’t let those hairs brushing your ears bug you and please don’t try to shave your own neck! Just remember at Fritz’s we’re here to take care of you and keep you looking fresh from cut to cut.
